The truth is that these are often the bigger contributors to poor health; not your homemade roti.

Before blaming wheat, focus on eliminating the real culprits:

  1. Ultra-processed packaged foods: Chips, instant noodles, packaged snacks, sugary cereals, and ready-to-eat foods are packed with additives, unhealthy fats, excess salt, and preservatives.
  2. Excessive refined sugar: Soft drinks, sweets, desserts, and sweetened beverages can lead to blood sugar spikes, weight gain, and long-term metabolic problems.
  3. Junk food and bakery snacks: Biscuits, cakes, pastries, pizzas, burgers, and fried fast foods are typically made with refined flour, unhealthy fats, and added sugar, making them far less nutritious than a simple homemade roti.

For most healthy individuals, whole wheat is not the enemy. It provides carbohydrates for energy, along with fiber and vitamins when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

Only people with conditions such as celiac disease, a wheat allergy, or medically diagnosed gluten sensitivity need to avoid wheat under professional guidance.

Instead of following food trends, start by improving the quality of your overall diet. Eat more home-cooked meals, including plenty of vegetables, fruits, pulses, and quality protein, and reduce your intake of packaged and processed foods. Once your diet is clean, you can better assess whether wheat or dairy is genuinely causing any discomfort.
